Social Wellsprings: Volume II contains the official writings (Encyclicals) of Pope Pius XI on social issues, collected and arranged, with notes, by Joseph Husslein (1873-1952).
In these Encyclicals, Pope Pius addresses Catholic social teaching and discusses the ethical implications of the social and economic order. For Pius, social issues and workers’ rights are not simply political questions, but must be seen as moral issues.
Pius defines fair wages and denounces exploitation, both material and spiritual, by international capitalism. He calls for the reconstruction of the social order based on the principles of solidarity and consensus. He warns of the dangers for human freedom and dignity arising from unrestrained capitalism, socialism, and totalitarian communism.
Pope Pius XI (1857 – 1939), was born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, and became Pope in 1922. He established Vatican Radio in 1931, and was the first Pope to broadcast on radio.
Published by Bruce, Milwaukee in 1949.
