Ford Madox Brown (1821 – 1893) was an English painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which included artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Morris. Brown began keeping a diary in 1847 and continued to keep a record of his life for some twenty years. His Diary is an absorbing and moving chronicle of the life of an impoverished artist striving for acknowledgement and success in mid-nineteenth-century London. In his Diary, Ford Madox Brown demonstrates his antagonism toward some of his contemporaries, notably Ruskin, Millais, and the London art trade. But he speaks warmly about other friends and associates – particularly William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Elizabeth Siddal.
