These long peninsulas provide an idyllic coastal region, littered with seaside towns and the start of the infamous Wild Atlantic Way. Cork is fondly known as ‘The Rebel County’, a slogan that Corkonians have embraced to the fullest. Many tribute the slogan to Irish revolutionary and Corkonian Michael Collins, but it dates back much further to a failed rebellion in the 15th century. Cork is closely linked to St. Patrick, with the city’s main thoroughfare named after the saint, and St. Patrick’s saltire (a white flag with a red diagonal cross) featured on Cork City’s crest, waving boldly from two adjacent castles. This flag pays note to St Patrick’s satire, but it sits darkened on a bright red plain.
