DownCounty Down, in Ulster, is Ireland’s most easterly county— a mere 30 kilometers east of Scotland. It’s home to part of Ireland’s second largest city, Belfast, which mostly resides in neighbouring county Antrim.
Down or Dúin, takes its name from ‘dún’ meaning a small ring fort. More specifically, the fort took its name from Downpatrick or ‘Dún Phádraig’. Downpatrick was previously known as ‘Dún Lethglaise’ but changed its name in the 13th century to pay tribute to the supposed burial site of St Patrick, who was buried there in the 5th century. This flag captures a simplified ring fort on a red plain.
