Previously, Laois was known as ‘Queen’s County’, a name that was quickly changed on the establishment of the Free State in 1922. Laois is still feeling the hangover from that rush to remove British monarchy references, with some legal deeds and documents still bearing ‘Queen’s County’. Further back, much, much, further back, in the 1st century, Laois was part of the Kingdom of Ossory, which stretched right down to the southern coast, to what is now Waterford. The northern section of Ossory was ruled by seven families—the Seven Septs of Loígis—this is the origins of the name Laois, and it has been known to be spelt as ‘Leix’ and ‘Laoighis’ in the past. This flag captures seven stripes for the Seven Septs, falling diagonally south to represent the land mass of Ossory.
