MeathCounty Meath, in Leinster, is named after the historic Kingdom of Meath. Its name comes from ‘midhe’ meaning middle—simply put, it was in the kingdom, in the middle of Ireland. At its height, the Kingdom of Meath encased all of today’s County Meath, much of Westmeath and land from at least six other counties. This legacy of the kingdom has given Meath the nickname ‘The Royal County’. Its history is debatably one of the richest in Ireland, with Brú na Bóinne containing some of the world's most important and well maintained prehistoric structures, including the large megalithic passage graves of Knowth, Newgrange and Dowth. Newgrange alone dates back at least five thousand years. This ‘M’ flag is an inverted version of the Westmeath flag, and captures a sharp simplified crown.
