The Mother’s Recompense is a domestic story that aims at “the education of the heart”, by illustrating a mother's solemn responsibilities and the influence of the home. Set in rural Wales, in Devonshire and London it follows the fortunes of the Ellen Fortescue, her brother Edward and her cousin Caroline Hamilton.
Grace Aguilar (1816 – 1847) was a novelist, poet and writer. Her family were Jewish and had come to London as refugees in the 18th century following the Portuguese Inquisition. Grace often wrote on Jewish history and religion, but she is best remembered for her novels, Home Influence and A Mother's Recompense.
Published by Groombridge and Sons in 1882.
