Some Irish Yesterdays, first published in 1906, contains thirteen portraits of life in Ireland, based on the experiences of cousins Edith Somerville from Cork and Galway-born Violet Martin. From 1889 until Martin’s death in 1915, Somerville and Martin (‘Ross’) wrote a series of novels in collaboration, including three that were televised in the 1980s as ‘The Irish RM’. Violet and Edith were part of the Protestant Anglo-Irish Ascendancy and some of the stories in Some Irish Yesterdays reflect this; there is one describing ‘A Patrick's Day Hunt’ as well as nostalgic accounts of their travels around Ireland, including a trip to Aran. However they also had deep-felt sympathy for the rural Irish and a genuine interest in their language and ways, and this can be seen in such stories as ‘Children of the Captivity’.  Published by T.
