An Anthology of English Prose: from Bede to. R L. Stevenson, arranged by S. L. Edwards
€6.00
Quay Books
An Anthology of English Prose shows the variety and richness of English prose, from King Alfred and Geoffrey of Monmouth in the Dark Ages, through the likes of John Wycliffe and Thomas More in the age of Reformation, up to Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Thomas Hardy.
In all there are some 160 passages, drawn from 92 sources, chosen as much for their historic interest as their literary worth. They illustrate not only the development of English prose, but also the ‘many moods and changes’ of the English mind, whether it was Bede writing of The Conversion of King Edwin, Richard Hakluyt discussing Drake and the Indians, John Evelyn’s account of The Great Fire or Lewis Carroll’s Mad Tea-party.
Published by J. M. Dent & Sons in 1934.
Good condition. Binding intact. Torn dust jacket.
Inscription on fly leaf.
