Quay Books
During the First World War, a young boy is sent down from the high country in New Zealand to board with a schoolmaster's family near Christchurch. He becomes a reluctant participant in the tangled lives of the three daughters of the house, Rose, Muriel, and Hilda. With its portrayal a young boy’s bewilderment in the midst of adult complexities, The Young have Secrets was Courage’s most successful novel.
James Francis Courage, born in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand in 1903 was a novelist, short-story writer and poet. From 1940 to 1950 he managed a bookshop in Hampstead, North London.
Published by Jonathan Cape/The Book Society in 1954.
