This is a collection of the works of four 18th Century poets, with quite extensive biographical notes.
James Thomson was a Scottish poet and playwright, known for his poems The Seasons and The Castle of Indolence and for the lyrics of "Rule, Britannia!".
James Beattie was also Scottish, he is remembered for his staunch opposition to slavery.
Gilbert West was a minor English poet, translator, and theologian.
John Bampfylde came from a prominent Devon family. He spent the latter part of his life in a psychiatric hospital in London and died of tuberculosis. He only ever published one book of poems, but the Romantic poet Robert Southey called them “some of the most original in our language”.
