Sacheverell Sitwell (1897 – 1988) was the younger brother of poet Edith Sitwell. He also wrote poetry, but is best remembered for his books on art, music, architecture, and travel. Selected Works contains a variety of short prose pieces, introduced as if it were an exhibition of paintings. There are portraits, landscapes, still lives of fruits and flowers, and flights of fancy which might be termed abstractions. Contents include: Golden Reign of Saturn, Orpheus and His Lyre; A Picture of Roumania; Mexico Festival at Nola and Finale in Form of a Bacchanale. A highlight of the book is La Vie Parisienne, a recreation the first night of Offenbach's operetta of the same name in 1866, which vividly recaptures the noisy glitter of an evening in Paris at the height of the Second Empire. Published by Robert Hale in 1955. The book is embellished with rare and beautiful illustrations from many sources. Good condition.  Very minor wear to dust jacket. Binding intact.
