Johann Strauss Sr (1804 – 1849) was an Austrian Romantic composer, famous for his waltzes. His son, also Johann (1825 – 1899), was even more successful; his most famous works include "The Blue Danube", "Kaiser-Walzer" (Emperor Waltz) and the operetta, “Die Fledermaus”.
Johann Strauss Jr wrote more than 150 waltzes, as well as polkas, quadrilles, mazurkas, and marches. His music combines considerable melodic invention and tremendous verve with suavity and polish.
Johann Strauss: a century of light music tells the life story of both men, and is still considered one of the standard biographies of Strauss, father and son. It offers a fascinating and insightful history of the men who popularised the waltz in 19th century Vienna.
