Eric Newton (1893-1965) was a British artist, art historian and critic, who wrote for the Manchester Guardian and the Sunday Times. He became a household name in the 1950s through his BBC radio talks. Newton was actively engaged in the renaissance in the arts in Post-War Britain, promoting the work of artists like Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore.   European Painting and Sculpture is a short account of the development of the fine arts, and in particular of painting, in Europe from the earliest times to the present day. First published in 1941, it remained a standard text on art history into the 1960s. Published by Pelican Books in 1945. Includes a fold-out board at the end with a chronology of artists.
