Mary, Lady Monkswell was born in 1849 as Mary Josephine Hardcastle, the daughter of a Liberal politician. In 1873 she married Robert Collier, another Liberal politician, who in 1886 succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Monkswell.
These Journals provide an insight into the life of a Victorian lady. Lady Monkswell was extraordinarily well connected in society and politics, with a sharp eye and keen interest in current events. She writes with emotion and feeling and includes interesting anecdotes about her life and travels.
Published by John Murray in 1946.
Frontispiece is a portrait of Lord Monkswell. With 7 further plates.
