Marguerite De Valois (La Reine Margot) is a historical novel, set in the 16th Century, during the French Wars of Religion. It is the work of Alexandre Dumas (1802 – 1870), famous for such swash-buckling historical adventures as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.
The villain of the novel is Marguerite’s mother, the Catholic Catherine De Medici, who controls the French throne through her sons. Marguerite is married off to the Protestant Henri of Navarre, but this apparent reconciliation proves hollow with the killing of thousands of Huguenots in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre just four days after the wedding. Meanwhile, Marguerite does not love her new husband, and begins a passionate affair with the Protestant soldier ‘La Môle’.
Brimful of court intrigue, poisonings, daring escapes, sumptuous feasts and clandestine trysts, Marguerite De Valois might take a few liberties with the facts of history, but like all Dumas’ novels, it is an exciting, action-packed and immensely entertaining.
