Young Sir Ludar and his family are based on the McDonnells of Antrim, a Scottish/Irish clan who were rivals, and sometime allies, of the O’Neills during a turbulent period of Irish history.
Talbot Baines Reed (1852 – 1893) was an English writer of boys' fiction and a regular contributor to The Boy's Own Paper. His wife, Elizabeth Greer, was from Northern Ireland, and the family often spent holidays in Donegal.
