Cross Creek, by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Quay Books
Cross Creek is a memoir of life in the Florida backcountry. Marjorie Kinnan (1896 – 1953) was born and grew up in Washington, D.C, but hated city life. In 1928 she and her husband Charles Rawlings purchased an orange grove near Hawthorne, Florida, in a hamlet named Cross Creek, located between Orange Lake and Lochloosa Lake.
Marjorie felt a profound and transforming connection to the remote wilderness. In this heart-warming and humorous account, she describes the daily struggle of country life, dealing with runaway pigs and a succession of unruly farmhands.
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was also fascinated by the lives of her "Florida cracker" neighbours. In fact, the book led to a libel suit in 1943 over her depiction of one Zelma Cason, whom she described as “an ageless spinster resembling an angry and efficient canary”!
Published by William Heinemann in 1942. First edition.
Illustrations by Edward Shenton.
