Threatened Paradise is an account of life in Borneo in the 1950s, written by an Anglican missionary. At that time Sabah (North Borneo) was one of the most remote places in the world and head hunters were still active. In addition, the region was just beginning to recover from Japanese occupation in the Second World War.    Cyril Alliston, who was born in 1911 in Cambridge, had already spent 10 years in South Africa when he and his wife Mary went to work in Borneo in 1950. At first, he was curate in charge of St Columba, Miri, and the Sarawak oil fields near Brunei; two years later he was appointed Archdeacon of North Borneo and Rector of Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu). Threatened Paradise is an entertaining and varied account of the people, traditions and customs of Sabah. Alliston recalls events such as the coronation of the Sultan of Brunei, a visit with his Bishop to a traditional Dayak longhouse and being asked to perform an exorcism at the house of one of his Chinese parishioners. Published by The Travel Book Club, London (1966). Clean copy in good condition with dustjacket.
