Cranberry & CreamHarvest: July - August 2020 Country: ColombiaProducer: Wilson Javier PennaRegion: HuilaProcess: WashedVariety: Colombia F6Altitude: 1,700 masl  Wilson has been producing coffee at his family’s farm Finca La Orquidea for more than 30 years, but has only recently focused on producing specialty coffee. At just 3 hectares the farm is small. Avocado and Guava trees provide natural shade for the coffee, and the varieties that grow here are Caturra and a local variety known as Colombia F6. We were blown away when we first tasted this coffee in October last year and even more excited when we found out these cherries came exclusively from the Colombia F6 trees.  The Colombia variety is not new to us. This was a highly productive and rust resistant hybrid introduced by the Colombia national Federation of Coffee growers (FNC) in the 1980’s. These plants were hugely successful and popular among growers until leaf rust mutations made it susceptible to disease. Sadly this variety is declining in popularity, and today most of these plants have been replaced by the more rust resistant hybrid known as Castillo.  Created through five generations of breeding and crossing, this coffee is the 6th iteration (F6) of the Colombia hybrid, and something we’ve not come across before! Whether nature, nurture or a combination of the two has resulted in its exceptional quality we do not know. Either way, this coffee is certainly special and up there with some of the best we’ve tasted from this origin.  Expect the most amazing creamy body, with notes of red currants and fresh cranberry.
