Quay Books
A Play Tonight is a collection of observations on the Theatre, made by the J C Trewin between 1949 and 1952. Among other productions, it reviews the 1951 revival of the York Mystery Plays, performed there for the first time since 1570.
John Courtenay Trewin (1908 – 1990) was a British journalist, writer and drama critic with an encyclopaedic knowledge of plays and performances. He served as drama critic on The Observer for more than 60 years and also contributed regular notices to Punch, the Illustrated London News and the Birmingham Post. He rarely missed a West End opening night and in 1983 he reckoned that he had reviewed around 7000 performances.
He was also a prolific writer of almost 100 books on topics such as topography, biography and theatre history.
“He always writes as one who really cares for the theatre.” – Dame Sybil Thorndike.
