Sarah Louise Interiors
A miniature version of Yap Island stone coinage. The yap is known as ‘Rai’ in the north and ‘Fai’ in the south of the island. Round, like millstones, these coins, carved in aragonite and calcite, range from 8cm to 4m in diameter. In order not to risk breaking the largest of these stones while they are being transported, the people of Yap leave them in place and make strict mental note to whom they belong.
