Sarah Louise Interiors
Representation of a stone currency, the Yap (Yap "Rai" for the North, Yap "Fai" for the South) which is a monetary system used in the Yap islands of Micronesia.Yap stones were originally big round stones similar to millstones, with a hole in the middle, whose diameter can be anywhere from 8 cm to 4 meters. They are carved out of a material composed of aragonite and calcite. Once broken, these stones lose all value. The inhabitants of Yap, so as not to risk breakage during transport, leave the heavier ones in the same place and keep a mental record of who they belong to.Material: stoneOrigin: Carolina Islands, Micronesia
