“They sailed away, for a year and a day,   To the land where the Bong-Tree grows” – Edward Lear At the age of 51, James Ramsey Ullman set out on an adventure. Travelling east, he flew from New York to Honolulu, then continued by sea to Guam and Palau. From there he slowly made his way to Tahiti, stopping off at many South Sea Islands along the way, before returning via the Tuamotu Islands. Often there was no scheduled transport between islands, he was delayed by torrential rains and hampered by red tape but he faced it all with patience and good humour. All in all, his trip took 414 days. This book describes the people he met and the places he saw. On Motu Tapu, one of the Boru Boru islets, ‘the Bong Trees gleamed’. But for all the loveliness of this paradise, he found ‘the usual quota of human problems and woes’. Published by Collins,1964. Hardcover. A good clean copy. Binding intact. No Dust jacket.
