The Greenwood is a collection of writings relating to Robin Hood compiled by poet Henry Newbolt. It includes ‘Maid Marian’, a novella by Thomas Love Peacock; an excerpt from Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Ivanhoe’ and the ballad, ‘the Nut-brown Maid’, as well as some of Newbolt’s own writings.
Sir Henry John Newbolt, (1862 – 1938) was an English poet, novelist and historian. The son of a vicar, he was known for his English patriotism and coined the phrase "Play up! play up! and play the game!", comparing war to a game of schoolboy cricket.
Newbolt was also a government adviser on the study of the English language and ‘The Greenwood’ was produced as part of a ‘Teaching English’ series.
Published by Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1925. Hardback. Thomas Nelson is a publishing firm that began in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1798.
A good clean copy with binding intact. On the last page, there is a pencil scrawl, which does not interfere with the text. There is some fading on the blue board covers.
