Snow People is a unique and fascinating account of life in Northwest Greenland, as told by the Irish writer, Lady Marie Herbert.

Born in Dublin in 1941, Marie Herbert, née McGaughey, lived in Sri Lanka, Egypt, South India and South Africa before training as an actress in London. In 1969 she married the explorer Sir Wally Herbert and in August 1971 the couple went to live among the northernmost tribe of Inuit, the Polar Eskimos of Greenland. With them was their ten-month-old daughter, Kari.

Snow People tells of the family’s struggles in an extreme and remote environment, but it also provides an important record of a dying way of life. Marie and Wally had a profound respect for the Inuit and wanted to preserve a record of their culture. For two years they lived alongside these independent hunters, learning from them how to survive in this harsh, yet beautiful environment.

Spirited, enthusiastic and sympathetic, Marie Herbert’s book tells the amazing story of a year of Arctic adventure: in doing so she has written an important anthropological account of a vanishing way of life.
