Maia and What Matters is a powerful read, and has become widely recognized as a modern classic. It centres around the fun-loving Maia, and the bond she share with her equally fun-loving grandmother. When the grandmother suffers major health problems, it is up to Maia to remind her of her favourite things. Prior evaluation from a parent may be advised, given the difficult themes of this book. However, it carries the potential to be an extremely important read for the right child. Tune Mortier's bittersweet story teaches the important lesson that life, no matter what its difficulties, can still be enjoyed.  Kaatje Vermeire's soft illustrations, at times resembling Japanese prints, establish her as a current master of the form.
