Country: Australia  Region: Victoria  Vintage: 2015 Category: Red Wine  Color:  Red Producer: William Downie "Bill Downie established his own label in 2003 after several years living and working in Burgundy. He is fanatical about the quality of his fruit and where it comes from, so where possible sources fruit from vineyards that use biodynamic and organic viticultural practices. By taking the best elements from the Burgundian producers he most admires and allying these to a more technocratic Australian approach, Bill has been able to develop his own style, making him one of the most sought after producers of Victorian Pinot Noir. The Yarra Pinot is carefully selected from vineyards situated in Denton View Hill in Yarra Glen. The soils here are grey clay loam over granite and it is the only vineyard in the Yarra planted on granite. The Gippsland Pinot is made with fruit grown on red soil in a vineyard planted in 1990 with a density of 6,500 vines per hectare. Taste them side by side and marvel at their differences!" Product Features: Sustainable;Vegetarian Winemaker: William Downie Vineyards: The fruit was carefully selected from vineyards situated in Lucinda Estate and Berry's Creek near Leongatha in South Gippsland. Soils here are red volcanic clay loam. Organic principles are implemented wherever possible. The vineyards are 120 metres above sea level and were planted in 1990 and 1998 respectively, both with a density of 6,500 vines per hectare. Clones used for the Gippsland Pinot Noir are MV6 and 777. Vinification: The fruit was hand harvested into 15kg crates and then hand sorted before being fully destemmed. Fermentation took place in wooden open-top fermenters. No temperature control was used and there were no punch downs or pump overs. No additions were made. The wine was pressed after 30 days' maceration and then filled to 30% new French oak for 10 months. The wine was bottled without fining or fltration. Tasting Notes: Perhaps the most lifted and aromatic wine from the 2015 vintage. It shows blackberry, blackcurrant, violets, damp red earth and wood spice on the nose. The palate has more black fruit as well as spice and some herbal undergrowth. The wine is textured and long with subtle tannins. Food Suggestion: Serve with a rare steak or with lightly grilled red meats. Closure: DIAM Cork  ABV:13%  Acidity [g/l]: 6.2
