Country: Italy  Region: Tuscany  Vintage: 2021 Category: White Wine   VINTAGEThe 2019 growing season began with a mild autumn and winter, with the cold weather arriving in January and February. Therewere good levels of rainfall in spring, but sharp drops intemperature lasted the end of May, which placed a strain onvegetative growth. Flowering, fruit set and veraison were goodand well-balanced overall, aided by light rainfall that arrived justas the vine was beginning to show signs of water shortage. Augustwas characterised by cool nights, good daytime breezes andsome light showers. By harvest time, the temperatures had risen, but only for a few days. September was marked by dry, breezy, mild days. Although challenging, 2019 has been tipped as one ofthe best vintages for Poggio al Tesoro in the last 15 years.AWARDSDecanter World Wine Awards 2020, SilverPRODUCERPoggio al Tesoro is a 70 hectare property in Bolgheri acquired in2002 by the Allegrini family. The first vineyard they bought, LeSondraie, is next door to Ornellaia and was previously rented bythem. It is 50 hectares in size and is planted with Merlot, CabernetFranc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Vermentino.VINEYARDSThe grapes for Solosole are grown on seven hectares of the 'LeSondraia' vineyard, at an altitude of 25 metres above sea level. The west-facing vineyard has deep soils made up of sand, graveland clay. The vines are trained in Guyot style and are planted at7,936 vines per hectare.VINIFICATIONThe grapes were hand harvested and sorted on arrival at thewinery. The whole grapes were then gently pressed andfermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks atapproximately 16° C for 20 days. No malolactic fermentation tookplace and the wine remained in tank on fine lees before bottling.TASTING NOTESBright straw yellow in colour, this Vermentino opens on the nosewith aromas reminiscent of white flowers and yellow plums. Thismedium-bodied wine has a succulent palate with refreshingacidity and delicate apricot notes on the finish
