Jet Bead
Native to China and Japan, Rhodotypos scandens is a medium-sized deciduous shrub with arching stems and an open, bushy habit, spreading by means of suckers. The long, serrated, deeply veined oval leaves are mid-green with a pointed tip. In late spring and early summer, white flowers appear, rather like single roses, but with four petals; these are attractive to pollinators. They are followed by shiny black berries; be aware that these are toxic, although some birds seem able to eat them. Jet bead is good in a woodland garden, but is also tolerant of urban pollution.
