Canadian Maple Red Sunset A variety of the Canadian or red maple dating to 1968, Acer rubrum Red Sunset is a tall, deciduous tree with green, three- to five-lobed leaves which turn brilliant red to orange-red, branch by branch, from early until late in the autumn. Upright clusters of inconspicuous pinkish-red flowers in spring, followed by pink, typical acer ‘keys’ in autumn. The emerging leaves, young twigs and fruit are all tinged red, making this one of the best maples for colour throughout the year. Needs acid soil to thrive and colour well. A vigorous tree with an upright habit, upswept branches and rounded, spreading crown, it makes an excellent specimen tree. Very hardy- it’s a good choice for colder areas. Site: Semi-shelteredSoil: Any reasonably deep soil, even water-logged; preferably acid to neutralPosition: Full sun or partial shadeSeason of Interest: Spring, summer, autumnHardiness: Fully hardyHeight: Over 40ft (12m) in 20 years Spread: Over 27ft (8m)
