Stag’s Horn Sumach
A popular shrub noted for its spectacular autumn colour, Rhus typhina is a large, suckering, deciduous shrub or small tree with an open, upright, spreading habit. Plants are either male or female. The deep green leaves are finely divided and reliably turn brilliant orange, gold and red in autumn. In summer curious cone-shaped yellow-green flower-heads appear, and on female plants, these are followed by by dense, velvety cones of deep crimson berries, which persist into winter. Stag’s horn sumach is a good specimen tree for a small sunny garden or courtyard, provided the suckers are pulled off, but it is best not planted in a lawn or border.
