Quercus myrsinifolia - Chinese Evergreen Oak
From south-eastern Asia, where it can grow larger than in our climate, Quercus myrsinifolia is a medium-sized, slow-growing, evergreen tree, with a compact, densely branched, spreading habit and rounded, half-open crown. The bark is smooth and deep grey. The rather bamboo-like leaves are 5”/12cm long with slightly serrated edges, emerging red, and turning deep, glossy green. Unobtrusive catkins are borne in spring, and the female flowers are followed by acorns in unusual, ringed cups. The bamboo-leaved oak is wind-resistant, useful in exposed positions and for shelter belts and screens.
