Giant Redwood Barabits’ Requiem
The tree for people who want to grow a giant redwood in their garden! Sequoiadendron giganteum Barabits’ Requiem is far smaller than its lofty relatives, but it will eventually make a medium-sized to tall tree with a light, open crown. It’s a fairly slow-growing, evergreen tree with a very narrow, weeping habit, and somewhat eccentric growth pattern, some branches being more horizontal than the usual weeping growth. The bark is rich red-brown, fissured and fibrous, and the leaves are pointed, blue-green needles. The flowers are inconspicuous, but are followed by reddish-brown cones, upright at first, later hanging. Named for Hungarian revolutionary, tree specialist and professor Dr Barabits, giant redwood Barabits’ Requiem makes a fine specimen tree.
