Stipa tenuissima Pony Tails
A slightly more compact version of the species, Stipa tenuissima Pony Tails is a small, clump-forming, deciduous grass whose leaves and flowers ripple in the slightest breeze. Very fine foliage and fluffy flowers emerge jade-green gradually turning straw-coloured in autumn, the long awns flowing in the breeze like the eponymous pony tails. Like the species, Mexican Feather Grass Pony Tails works beautifully in gravel and is particularly useful for knitting a planting scheme together. Seeds about mildly. Cut back dead foliage in early spring to allow the fresh new leaves to come through.
