Standish Yew A dwarf, columnar, golden cultivar of the common yew, Taxus baccata Standishii is a small, very slow-growing evergreen shrub with an upright, narrow habit and very erect branches rising from the base. The rich yellow, narrow, pointed leaves bring a splash of light into shady areas, although the colour is richest in full sun. Insignificant yellow flowers are followed by light red yew-berries. Good as a feature shrub in a very small garden or courtyard, or as a rockery plant. It tolerates clipping well, should it eventually succumb to middle-aged spread. Be aware that the plant is toxic to livestock. Standish yew holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Site: Tolerates exposure and urban pollutionSoil: Any well-drained soilPosition: Colours best in full sun; also happy in partial shadeSeason of interest: All yearHardiness: Very hardyHeight: 5’ (1.5m) Spread: 39” (1m) in 20-50 years
